What it is

Stack 2–3 pre-purchase add-on checkboxes on the checkout form. The buyer already has intent, card is out, cognitive load is committed. Each bump solves a distinct concern (speed / protection / completeness). Done right, 20%+ of buyers select at least one.

Why this fits TerraShell specifically

Your PDP converts at 4.9% at $183 AOV — hot buyers. But right now "BONUS Emergency Preparedness Checklist ($29 value)" and "FREE Tactical Whistle ($12 value)" are baked into the bundle as freebies. You're leaving the bumpable value on the table.

The digital-to-printed-checklist upgrade is the sneakiest win in this stack — it costs ~$2 COGS and sells at $9 because you're already promising the PDF as a freebie.

Proposed TerraShell bump stack

#BumpPriceCOGSAddressesExpected take
1 Shipping Protection $6.99 ~$0 "Will it arrive safely?" 25–35%
2 Printed Field-Laminated Emergency Action Plan $9 ~$2 "I want the real version, not the PDF" 10–15%
3 Tactical Fire-Starter + Magnesium Striker $14 ~$4 "Warmth is solved, ignition isn't" 8–12%
Blended expected revenue $3.50–$6 per order. At 1,485 orders in your sample = ~$5k–$9k incremental on identical traffic. At 30,000 orders/year = +$100k–$180k/year from three checkboxes.

Bump 1
☐ Shipping Protection — $6.99
If your box is lost, stolen, or damaged in transit, we ship a replacement same-day. No questions. No claims forms.
Bump 2
☐ Printed Field-Laminated Emergency Action Plan — $9.00
The checklist that ships free as a PDF — but field-laminated, wallet-sized, tearproof, and ready for your go-bag. The version Marcus Webb keeps in his own truck.
Bump 3
☐ Tactical Fire-Starter + Magnesium Striker — $14.00
TerraShell keeps you warm. This starts the fire that cooks your food. Works wet. Works at −20°F. Works 10,000+ strikes.

Implementation spec

  1. Checkout engine: Checkout Champ or Zipify OCU. Native Shopify checkout can't handle multiple bumps cleanly.
  2. Visual layout: stacked cards, each with its own icon, 3–5 word label, 1-line description, and price shown as +$6.99 in green.
  3. Price escalation: low → medium → high, as above.
  4. Do NOT pre-select. FTC compliance risk (see warning below).
  5. Position: between quantity tier selection and payment info. Above the fold on mobile ideally.
  6. Each bump is a separate SKU in Shopify, with its own inventory or "digital/service" classification.
Compliance warning — do not pre-select Matt Matarano (Checkout Champ): "That's a big no-no with the three-letter agencies. Consumer protection is a real thing. They will tear through it, especially if you start doing some volume." Pre-selected bumps trigger FTC scrutiny. Don't do it. Watch him deliver the warning inline with the Nooro walkthrough: 24:00.

The five principles every bump must satisfy

  1. Relevance — directly relates to the main product being bought
  2. Enhances value — practical, not an unrelated upsell
  3. Addresses objections — resolves a concern the buyer already has
  4. Logical next step — feels like a natural extension
  5. Perceived value — framed as high-value relative to price (the PDF→printed upgrade nails this)

Watch-outs

Don't stack more than 3 bumps Decision fatigue lowers take rates across the board.
Each bump must be differentiated Three "warranty" variants fail. Speed / Protection / Completeness is the right axis.
Inventory matters Fire-starters need fulfillment SKU. Shipping protection is a self-insure line-item. Printed checklist needs print-on-demand or batched print workflow.

Expected impact — realistic ranges

Nooro data
20%+ of buyers take at least one bump when given a 3-stack
Blended revenue
$3.50–$6 per order
Current sample
1,485 orders × $5 = ~$7k incremental on the same traffic
Annualized at scale
30k orders/yr × $5 = +$150k/yr from three checkboxes
Margin profile
Bump 1 is ~100% margin; Bumps 2–3 are 70–80% — the blended contribution is high

Next moves

  1. Confirm checkout stack — are you on native Shopify (switch to Checkout Champ or OCU) or already on a bump-capable platform?
  2. Source print-on-demand partner for the field-laminated checklist
  3. Source fire-starter SKU (Bic Magnesium or private label)
  4. Write & ship all three bump copy blocks; A/B bump order (Speed-Protection-Completeness vs. Completeness-Speed-Protection)
  5. Set up per-bump take-rate reporting so you can drop losers after 500 orders
